Surplus funds list FAQ

What is a surplus funds list?

A surplus funds list is a compilation of tax-sale or foreclosure cases where the property sold for more than what was owed, leaving excess money (surplus, overage, or excess proceeds) that the former owner — or their heirs — can claim from the county. Each record typically shows the former owner, the surplus amount, the sale date, and the claim deadline where the county has published one.

Are surplus funds lists free?

Many counties publish their own surplus or excess-funds list for free, usually as a PDF on the clerk, treasurer, or tax commissioner website. Those official lists are the source of truth. What LienSuite sells is the compilation work: normalized CSVs across counties, refreshed as counties republish, with amounts and published deadlines in one consistent format. You can download our free masked national sample on this page with a free account.

How do I get a surplus funds list for 2026?

Three ways: download the free national sample CSV on this page (owner names masked to initials); buy a full single-county surplus funds list as a one-time $97 CSV with complete former-owner names; or subscribe to the Excess Proceeds plan to work the whole surplus catalog in-app with filters, deadline tracking, and skip tracing.

Can I download the list as a CSV or PDF?

Our lists are delivered as clean CSV files, which open directly in Excel, Google Sheets, or Numbers — a working format you can sort and filter, unlike a static PDF. The free sample on this page is also a CSV.

Who can claim surplus funds?

Generally the former owner of record at the time of the sale, or their heirs, and in some states junior lienholders. The former owner can always file the claim directly with the county for free — no recovery agent, attorney, or paid service is required. Claim procedures, deadlines, and recovery-fee rules vary by state; several states cap recovery fees and some bar non-attorney fees entirely, so verify the rules for your state with a licensed attorney before pursuing claims.

How current is this data?

We currently track 4,519 surplus records across 15 counties in 3 states, refreshed as counties republish their lists. Every amount and deadline is an estimate as of our last pull for that county — records may have been claimed, paid, reduced, or expired since, so always confirm the current status directly with the county.

This is data, not a recovery service.

LienSuite compiles and organizes public county records. We are not a law firm and not a surplus recovery or "finder" service — we do not locate claimants, file claims, or take a percentage of anything. Recovery fees are capped by state law and vary by state; some states bar non-attorney recovery fees entirely. Former owners — or their heirs — can always file directly with the county for free; no recovery agent, attorney, or paid service is required.
